Transforming Spaces Nurturing Minds: The Child and Adolescent Medical-Psychiatric Unit Revitalization
In the heart of Cleveland, renovation work is underway on the third floor of University Hospitals Horvitz Tower. The Medical Behavioral Unit is the first completed phase of the project and it offers hope and healing for young patients needing medical-psychiatric and behavioral health care. Upon completion of the CAPU in Phase II, this 21,600 square foot project is not just a renovation; it reimagines what pediatric psychiatric care can feel like when healing, dignity, and belonging lead the way.

Unity in Vision: Crafting Spaces with Heart and Expertise
The renovation of the CAPU and the accompanying Medical Behavioral Unit shows the power of integrated, purpose driven design. +Detail, known for its focus on human centered healthcare interiors, leads the interior design vision in collaboration with Turner Construction, IMEG (MEP Engineer), Barber and Hoffman (Structural Engineer), and Perspectus (Architect). Together, they aim to turn these vital pediatric units into welcoming spaces that support mental, emotional, and sensory well being.
Trauma-Informed Design: Calming, Comforting, and Safe
The design approach centers on a trauma informed philosophy that reduces environmental stressors and helps emotional regulation. Every detail was selected to create peace and connection, from the open milieu, a central calming social space, to the use of natural light, soft textures, and quiet areas. Deep purple ribbons flow through the design to symbolize warmth and consistency throughout the unit.
Sensory supportive elements are key, including a comfort room that offers a soothing retreat where patients can regain a sense of calm. Diverse materials and gentle textures allow patients to engage their senses in a non overstimulating environment, improving therapeutic outcomes.

Designing for Dignity, Privacy, and Autonomy
Empowering patients is a guiding principle of the CAPU and Medical Behavioral Unit design. Nurse stations have been intentionally redesigned with clear glass and approachable counter heights to invite eye level connection, especially with children. This openness encourages nurses to move beyond the glass barrier and engage directly with patients, creating a culture of trust and approachability.
Each space affirms patient dignity and autonomy, respecting their unique healing journey while providing options for social engagement and quiet personal space.
Spaces that Invite Healing and Belonging
The design promotes communal interaction as part of the healing process. Instead of isolating patients, the layout encourages them to gather in shared spaces that feel safe and welcoming. Whether they come together to eat, study, or simply be, the open layout promotes emotional connection, a research driven concept critical to recovery.
The thoughtful color palette includes warm neutrals, calming greens, and intentional pops of bold vibrant hues. These choices serve more than aesthetic purposes. They signal emotional safety and energy while reinforcing Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital brand standards.
Sustainability and Innovation at the Forefront
Sustainable design practices guided every material choice. Surfaces were selected not just for durability and safety but also for their low environmental impact. Creative reuse and selective demolition, adds continuity, familiarity, and joy to the space.
Acoustic comfort was also a key factor. Nora rubber flooring in custom-built phone alcoves and quiet zones helps reduce noise, enhancing privacy and relaxation.

A Unified Vision for the Future of Pediatric Behavioral Health
This project represents more than the teamwork of skilled professionals. It embodies a collective effort to change the standard of care for children and adolescents facing mental health challenges. The partnership between University Hospitals, Turner Construction, +Detail, and Perspectus is driven by shared compassion, commitment to quality design, and dedication to young people and their families.
Looking Ahead
The revitalization of the CAPU and Medical Behavioral Unit is about more than aesthetics. It is about creating an environment that promotes healing. With trauma informed design, sensitivity to sensory needs, and deep respect for human dignity, this space sets a standard for the future of pediatric psychiatric care.
Together, we are not just designing rooms. We are creating nurturing environments that empower, heal, and inspire.
